Director: Kim Wissman Kim became the Preschool Director in 2017 after teaching for 15 years. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Maryland and became a certified teacher by MSDE through additional coursework. She is a professional member of NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children), and has earned the Maryland Child Care Credential Level 4. “Miss Kim” counts every day a blessing to work at GUMC where she can live out her passion for the education of young children by encouraging the lifelong joys of learning and the love of God! Kim has been married to her husband Patrick for 36 years and is the mother of four sons. Now that her boys are mostly grown, she spends her free time reading, doing yoga, walking her Border Collie “Boo Radley”, cuddling her cat “Presto”, socializing with friends and watching Netflix with her husband! She is a member of Glenelg United Methodist Church where she enjoys being active in the UMW (United Methodist Women), Bible study, the book club and volunteering in VBS. Kim has been with GUMC since
Pre-School Assistant: Karen Myers Miss Karen lives in Damascus with her husband Greg. She is a Mom to three grown children and Grandmother to 4 boys ranging in ages 8-13. Daughters Katey and Kelly (with son-in-law Tim) live locally. Kyle, her youngest, has just graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in World Economics. Karen enjoys spending time with the grand-boys. After a career in retail management spanning 20 years, Karen decided to stay home with Kyle. Getting involved with Scouts, PTA and grand-boys, she discovered a passion for kids…and considers her job at GUMC a gift from God!
PreK Teacher: Cindy Coon Cindy resides in Woodbine with her husband, Dan and their two children. She attended Montgomery College where she majored in Handicap Assistance then transferred to University of Maryland where she majored in Therapeutic Recreation. She obtained her 90 hour Early Childhood Certification from Howard County Community College. Cindy has been teaching in Daycares and Preschools since 1990 and has been at GUMC Preschool since 2002. She considers teaching at GUMC a gift from God. In her spare time, Cindy enjoys taking morning walks, cooking, and taking yoga classes.
3's and Pre-K Teacher : Becky Kenney Becky lives in Ellicott City with her husband Danny and children: Lola (16), Jonah (14), and Isabella (10). They belong to Bethany Church in Ellicott City. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Southeastern Oklahoma Southern University. Becky taught the 4’s and 5’s program for the School for Little People in Sherman, Texas for several years. She enjoys cooking, gardening, sewing and the beach.
PreK Teacher: Michelle McBryde Michelle lives in Mt. Airy with her husband Lee. Her older son Evan, his wife Breana, and granddogs Tux and Skye live in Ellicott City. Her youngest son Ethan lives and works in Richmond, Virginia with her other granddog Jasmine! Michelle enjoys family time, yearly mission trips with their church (Elders Baptist Church), crafts, planning activities for her Pre-K class, and being with friends. Michelle received her BA in Early Childhood Education from Bridgewater College and has taught kindergarten/preschool since 1984, taking a few years off when her boys were little. She loves sharing God’s love with GUMC children and families and watching God work in the lives of those around her!
3's Teacher: Leslie Wendler Leslie and her husband Eric have lived in Mt. Airy for 18 years with their three children, Paige, Max and Mason. Leslie holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration from Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania and earned her 90 Hour Early Childhood Certification from Carroll Community College. She has been an early childhood educator for the past 14 years, 8 of which were spent teaching a Christian based curriculum. She has also been a Sunday School teacher, a VBS leader, a middle school mentor, as well as a Girl Scout leader for 3 years. She and her family are active members of Calvary Lutheran Church in Woodbine where she and her husband regularly volunteer in various capacities. Leslie thoroughly enjoys working with young children and getting to know new families every year and considers it a privilege to work with such a talented staff. In her spare time she enjoys reading and participating in running events with her husband.
2's and 3's Teacher Emily Wofford Emily lives in Jessup with her husband Rodney and children: Xavier (18) and Olivia (15). They belong to Bridgeway Community Church in Columbia. Emily earned her BA in American Studies from Marlboro College in Vermont. She was a teaching assistant at Christ Memorial Christian Preschool for four years. Emily then completed the 90 Hour Early Childhood Certification at Howard Community College and taught Pre-K as lead teacher for two years. Emily has been a teaching assistant and lead teacher in 2’s and 3’s classes at GUMC for the past two years. She also holds a Maryland Child Care Credential at level three. Emily enjoys cooking, running, and playing with her puppy, Rocky. She feels blessed to be working with the children at GUMC.
3's Teacher Assistant: Fran Hodges Fran resides in Laurel, Maryland , and in the most recent years was employed as a Teacher's Aide at Good Beginnings Child Care and Preschool, and also enjoyed being an Assistant Coach throughout Chess Clubs in the Howard County Public Elementary School System. Before these positions, she served in administrative assistant capacities with The National Institutes of Health for many years, as well as with a financial services firm. She feels that of all the path she's taken, working with children is the most rewarding, and she is most grateful for the opportunity to work with GUMC families!
PreK 4 Teacher Assistant: Mary Stubs Mary lives with her husband Mike and two of their three daughters in Dayton. Her oldest daughter is married and lives in El Paso. Mary received her 90 Hour Early Childhood Certification from Howard Community College. Mary worked with GUMC Preschool previously as an Assistant Teacher. More recently she has been doing office work for her husband’s business and worked as a Teacher’s Aide at Dayton Oaks Elementary School. Mary loves spending time with her family and traveling.
3's and Pre-K Teacher Assistant: Pam Sumpter Miss Pam lives in Glenwood with her husband and three sons Tim, Evan and Braeden. Her oldest son Tim just graduated from nursing school. Her daughter Alyssa lives in Pennsylvania and is studying Business Management. Her youngest son Braeden is a sophomore at Glenelg High School and Evan is pursuing his artistic interests. Pam received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from the University of Maryland and taught first grade for many years. She left teaching after eight years to raise her family. In 1995, she moved to Glenwood. All of her children attended GUMC. After her youngest started kindergarten, Miss Pam returned to work, subbing for the Howard County Public School System. She enjoyed doing that for nine years, but was excited to return to the GUMC family in 2017, where she enjoys working with the GUMC children in a place that holds a special place in her heart!
PreK 4 Teacher Assistant: Suzanne Wenzel Suzanne lives in Glenwood with her husband Richard, their 13 year-old Natalie and their dog Scooby. Suzanne earned her BA in Social Work from Millersville University in Pennsylvania and she received her 90 Hour Early Childhood Certification from Anne Arundel Community College. She worked in the Social Work field for many years and then became a stay-at-home Mom. Suzanne has worked with children as a Sunday School teacher, a VBS leader, a Girl Scout leader, and a volunteer at her daughter’s school. She came to GUMC Preschool by serving on the Board of Directors, then volunteering in Miss Michelle’s classroom, then becoming a substitute teacher. She was thrilled to accept the Teacher Assistant position and loves working with the kids! She enjoys spending time with her family, friends, traveling, reading and walking Scooby!
Music Teacher All Classes Brittany Rachin Brittany lives in Sykesville with her husband Danny and her son Harrison , who is 1. She graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan college with a degree in Music Education with an emphasis in Vocal Music. She then spent some time working at Disney World before settling down to teach middle school general and vocal music in Howard County. After moving to teach in England in 2014, she returned to teach elementary school music last fall. She loves traveling, hiking,singing, being crafty, and spending time with her family. She is excited to be able to teach music at GUMC.
